From Funchal to the Top 100: Sofia Aveiro Pita – My Squash Journey

Here at Instant Home we have been supporting Sofia’s squash journey since before she turned pro and we are always delighted to receive news on her sporting career. Here’s an update on how she’s progressing in her own words.

As a professional squash player, I’m dedicating my life to a sport that’s all about intensity, skill, and drama. It’s a global game that pushes athletes to their limits, and I’m proud to be a part of it.

I want to share my squash journey with you, from picking up a racket at 14 to chasing my dream of becoming a top-ranked player.

Early Steps and Pro Debut

Born in Funchal, Madeira, I moved to Cambridge and discovered squash at 14.  The competitive fire ignited quickly, and within four years, I was playing competitively. I train twice a day, six days a week, alongside some of England’s best at the Professional Training Hub. My coach, England’s High-Performance Coach Adam Fuller, pushes me to new heights.

Junior Success and Turning Pro

My junior career in England was a success, culminating in a hard-earned 13th place finish – a testament to my goal of reaching the top 15.

In 2019, with a burning ambition, I turned professional. Starting at world ranking 279, the road wasn’t easy. COVID lockdowns threw a curveball, but I persevered,  improving my ranking to a career-high 132 by the 2022/23 season. This journey also saw me crowned Portugal’s leading female player by winning the National Championship in 2021/22.

So far I have achieved several moments to be proud of:

  • 4 Professional Finals.
  • Won 2 National Tournaments Titles.
  • Cambridgeshire Cup Champion.
  • Invited to compete at the World Championship Qualifiers.
  • I’ll represent Portugal at the European team championship for the third time this year.

This year, I’m aiming high:

Short Term:

  • Crack the top 100 by the end of the 2023/2024 season.
  • Claim victory at a Challenger Tournament.
  • Regain my Portuguese National Championship title. 🇵🇹

Long Term:

  • Secure a coveted spot in the top 10 of the world rankings.
  • Lift a Major PSA Title – that’s the ultimate dream!
  • Represent Portugal at a major international event. 🇵🇹
  • Inspire future generations of squash players.

Squash is more than just a sport; it’s a spectacle of athleticism, dynamism, and pure exhilaration. Played in iconic locations worldwide, it boasts captivating stars who inspire millions. This “sleeping giant” is poised for explosive growth, especially with the introduction to the Olympics in 2028, and I’m excited to be a part of it.
