Owen’s apprenticeship journey with us

As an independent business, we have always seen the importance of supporting young people into work. It’s for that reason that we felt passionate about giving opportunities to the young within our community by offering apprenticeships, as was the case with our current Warehouse Operative Owen.

Owen started with us in October 2018, coming to us straight from secondary school, at the age of 17.

At that time Owen was on an apprenticeship program via Cambridge Regional College, studying a Level 2 Supply Chain and Warehouse Operative course.

Through his shared time with us, and Cambridge Regional College, Owen quickly became a valued member of the team. He navigated the fundamental requirements of working within the warehouse and delivering and installing our rental furniture with precision and ease.

Owen went from strength to strength, showing dedication and motivation for his role and coursework.

During his time with us Owen has showed a real aptitude and understanding for our existing stock system and became the warehouse team member responsible for coordinating and overseeing the IT element of the stock control.

Post apprenticeship, Owen put himself forward when a new driver was required, fulfilling a vital role within our operation. In offering him this role we have been able to put Owen through his forklift training, enabling him to perform to the fullest extent.

Owens current responsibilities now include:  Delivering, installing and collecting furniture, as agreed with the client, in a professional and efficient manner. Maintaining a well-stocked, safe and organised warehouse.

When asked what he most enjoyed about his job this was his response:

“There are multiple things that I love about my job.  Firstly getting to travel the country to visit new places is great!  Also, constantly learning new things whilst being surrounded by a great team as well!”

Outside of work Owen enjoys regular trips to the gym, where he will be found most evenings!!  He also enjoys going to watch football matches.

We have recently welcomed another apprentice to our expanding team, however if you are considering an apprenticeship, then here’s a few things that you might like to know:

An apprenticeship is a real job where you learn, gain experience and get paid. You’re an employee with a contract of employment and holiday leave. By the end of an apprenticeship, you’ll have the right skills and knowledge needed for your chosen career, this often leads to a permanent position within the company that the apprenticeship is taken with.

An apprenticeship can take between one and 6 years to complete depending on which one you choose, what level it is and your previous experience.

You can start an apprenticeship program whether you’re starting your career, considering a change or you simply want to upskill. You can even have a previous qualification such as a degree.

As an apprentice you’ll:

  • learn and train for a specific job
  • get paid and receive holiday leave
  • get hands-on experience in a real job
  • study for at least 20% of your working hours – usually at a college, university or with a training provider
  • complete assessments during and at the end of your apprenticeship
  • be on a career path with lots of future potential

If this route to employment sounds like the path for you then you can find out more by visiting https://www.gov.uk/browse/education/find-course and if you would like to register your interest for an apprenticeship with us in September 2022 please contact us at: customerservice@instanthome.co.uk
